To begin with this recipe, we have to first prepare a few components. You can cook truffle mac and cheese using 9 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you cook it.
The ingredients needed to make Truffle Mac and Cheese:
- 2-3 tablespoons butter
- 3-4 tablespoons flour
- 300-400 g mixed, good quality cheeses grated. Options like Gruyere, cheddar, blue, Stilton. This quantity and type varies by taste
- 750 ml milk (added little by little, each cup is 250 ml)
- to taste Salt
- Pepper to taste
- 3-4 tablespoons truffle oil
- Breadcrumbs if available
- 250 g macaroni
Instructions to make Truffle Mac and Cheese:
- Melt butter in a large saucepan
- Once melted, add flour one spoon at a time and stir until mixed. Set aside to let mixture cool for at least 10 mins.
- Warm 1 cup of milk and slowly add into the butter and flour mixture and mix
- Once butter and flour mixture is combined with first cup of milk, keep on medium heat and add cheese and milk to start moving towards consistency desired. Add salt, pepper to taste. Add 3 tablespoons of truffle oil. Keep stirring to ensure no separation of the sauce at this stage.
- Add more cheese, flour and milk to get to consistency desired. Add salt, pepper, truffle oil to taste. - This sauce has 750ml milk, a 4th tablespoon of flour and cheddar and stilton cheese.
- Boil macaroni in salted water until soft. Keep slightly under cooked.
- Mix macaroni into sauce well. Add macaroni little by little to ensure sauce quantity is adequate.
- Add the mixture into a baking dish. Put one layer of Mac and cheese, add a layer of grated cheese, and then add the rest of the Mac and cheese before adding another layer of cheese. The middle layer can be skipped if the dish is thin. Bread crumbs on the top layer would make a good addition. Can also sprinkle some more truffle oil / truffle shavings on top.
- Bake on 180 degrees. Monitor closely for timing but probably 20-30 mins. Finish with some grill mode to brown. Picture from a previous Mac and cheese made with gruyère, cheddar and little mozzarella.
